How to Choose the Right Teacher Chalkboard for Your School

Porcelain Steel vs. Composition Chalkboard Surfaces

Porcelain steel chalkboards use a ceramic coating bonded to a steel backing. The surface resists scratching and ghosting longer than composition boards. Composition boards use a painted surface that fades with heavy classroom use.

Standard Sizes and Installation Configurations

Standard classroom chalkboards measure 4 feet high by 8 to 12 feet wide. ASI and Claridge offer multiple width options for standard and non-standard wall layouts. Confirm your wall dimensions before ordering.

Brand Comparison: ASI Visual Display vs. Claridge Products

ASI Visual Display Products manufactures the 9800 Series for high-use institutional settings. Claridge Products manufactures the 800 Series for professional classroom use. Contact our team with your wall dimensions to confirm the right model.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Question and Answer

Q1: What is the difference between a chalkboard and a blackboard?

A1: Chalkboard and blackboard are two names for the same product. The term blackboard comes from the original black slate surfaces used historically. Modern institutional versions typically use dark green or grey porcelain surfaces rather than natural slate.

Q2: What are the main types of chalkboards used in schools?

A2: The main types are porcelain steel, composition, slate, and glass chalkboards. Porcelain steel is the institutional standard for K-12 schools because of its surface durability. Composition boards are a lower-cost alternative. Slate and glass are specialty options for specific academic settings.

Q3: Why do some schools still use chalkboards instead of whiteboards?

A3: Chalk produces less glare than dry erase markers on bright surfaces, which can be easier for students to read from across the room. Porcelain chalkboards also produce less chalk residue than older composition boards. Some districts standardize on chalk for budget or subject-specific reasons.

Q4: What chalkboard size fits a standard K-12 classroom teaching wall?

A4: Standard classroom chalkboards measure approximately 4 feet high by 8 to 12 feet wide. The right width depends on available wall space behind your teaching station. Confirm your wall dimensions before selecting a size. Contact our team for sizing guidance at no charge.

Q5: Do you accept school purchase orders for school chalkboards?

A5: Yes. We accept school purchase orders and work with TIPS, NCPA, and PEPPM cooperative purchasing contracts. Contact our team at 877-909-9910 or rick@todaysclassroom.com for volume pricing and bid documentation.

Q6: Can your team help specify the right chalkboard for our school?

A6: Yes, at no charge. Our Project Team reviews your room dimensions and grade level and recommends the right chalkboard size and surface type. In-person site visits are available. Visit the Project Team page to get started.
