School Desks

A school desk is so much more than just a table with a chair; it's a student's home away from home during the school year. Students settle into their desks and spend more than half of their 6-7 hour school day seated, listening and learning. It should be a place they feel comfortable in, that will help them reach their learning goals. Some things to consider before buying desks for your classroom are as follows:

Grade Level 

A functional desk for a kindergarten student may not be the best fit for a high school student. It is important to consider your students and their ages. Jr. Executive desks are well-suited for elementary students. The large work surface, available in different finishes such as laminate and hard plastic, is ideal for younger learners. The built-in storage space allows students who do not have access to lockers a place to easily store all of their classroom supplies. As students grow in age, they deserve a workspace that does the same. Middle school and high school students do not require as much storage in their desk space, as they have access to personal lockers within their school. At this age, students are often changing classes and are not the only students sitting at their desks during the day. Open front desks are a great option for this age group as they provide a place for students to store their notebooks during class, yet they can quickly grab them when the bell rings for their next class. Combination desks (a durable tabletop with an attached chair) are great options for older, high school students. These students usually do not need to move their seats to reach the table, and the book basket underneath still provides storage for materials if needed. Having tables for STEM classrooms is also a popular option. These chairs are a great option for classrooms with older students. 

Teaching Style

Collaborative learning is something that many educators are implementing in their classrooms. Famous education philosopher John Dewey believed that active engagement helped foster learning within children. Teachers using this teaching style should provide their students with the proper desks to create a more functional, collaborative learning environment.

Diamond and triangle desks are a big hit with educators as they can place students in smaller groups of four or larger groups of six, depending on how they wish to arrange their classroom. Silhouette, single-student desks also go great in groups of four or separated. The single desk allows each individual to have their workspace while still being able to sit close to friends and work collaboratively in their small groups.
