Classroom chairs are essential in schools. They help create a welcoming classroom environment. They also provide students with a comfortable place to sit and spend their day. Students of all ages use school chairs; however, they may vary in shape and size depending on the class and grade level of the students. Since students spend a large amount of time during the day sitting in chairs, it is important that teachers fill their classroom with high-quality, comfortable chairs.
What Types of School Chairs Do We Offer?
At Today’s Classroom, we have a large variety of chairs to fit your students' needs, including:
- Active seating - Types of seating that allow students to move around while being seated. Best for students who have a hard time sitting still.
- Arm charis - Provide two armrests that add an extra level of comfort to the chair.
- Ball chairs - An exercise ball that has been made into a chair so that students who need to move can bounce while still being seated. This helps many students focus.
- Book basket/rack chairs - Include a basket or rack under the chair that can be used to hold items such as books.
- Cantilever - L-shaped legs connected to the back of the chair, which creates a slight bounce for those sitting in it.
- Caster - Rolling chairs that are easy to move around the room.
- Stools - A higher-legged seating option, usually without a back. Stools have the option to swivel and move on wheels.
- Folding - A great option for rooms that don’t have a lot of space; lightweight and easy to move.
- Ladder Back - Popular choice for elementary students, as they are very sturdy chairs and help students sit up straight.
- Music - Often includes a padded seat, these are used in the band and choir room during rehearsals.
- Sled base - U-shaped base that resembles a sled provides a sturdy and reliable seat.
- Teacher - Padded seat, with armrests. Often on wheels to make moving around the room easy.
- X-Brace - Extra support is added to the underside of the chair with a metal X.
- Stacking - Save space with chairs that easily stack on top of each other, making reorganizing and cleaning your classroom easier.
- Non-stacking - Chairs that are unable to stack together.
- Bundles - Buy a class set of chairs to ensure all of your students have a place to sit this school year.
How Do You Know Which School Chair To Choose?
When choosing your school chairs, it is important to consider your class. The chairs you choose will depend mainly on the age of your students. Some chairs are a great option for high school-aged students that would not suit elementary students. Consider the height of the chairs and if they will go well with your student desks and/or tables. While it is important to look at your entire class when choosing seating options, also recognize if you have students who would benefit from a different type of chair. According to Northwestern College, Iowa, studies show that some students benefit from chairs that allow them to move, such as ball or active chairs. These types of students perform better and focus more when in an alternative form of seating rather than traditional chairs.
