Free iPad Common Core Reading Apps

Most educators and schools are working with restricted budgets; so stretching the technology dollar is a high priority. Many schools are fortunate to have iPads, but there are more schools with one iPad per classroom than those who have an iPad for every student.

Even if you only have one iPad for your classroom, you can create a learning station for up to 10 students with the Califone stereo JB310 jackbox . The following group of iPad apps was among those recommended by the editors atTech & Learning magazine in their January 2013 issue. These apps all support the Common Core State Reading Standards and they are all FREE.

Find the Synonym – Grades 4/5. Combine the seven letters in each game to find the synonym/antonym before the time runs out.

Phonics Tic-Tac-Toe Interactive Game – Grades K-2. Interactive game explores vowel sounds, syllables, and more.

Phonics Genius – Grades K-2. Over 6,000 words grouped by phonics sounds.

Dictionary.com Dictionary & Thesaurus. All Grades. Works offline too! One ofTime magazine’s Top Ten Back-to-School Apps.

Voicethread. All grades. Create and share dynamic conversations around documents, snapshots, diagrams, and videos.

If you’re new to apps, try out these free apps first, then you’ll have a better idea of what kinds of apps work best in your classroom. Education magazines, websites (including this one at Califone.com), and blogs often make recommendations on new apps. Many of them are free like the ones listed above.
